Here are some answers to frequently asked questions.
Answer How often and for how long should a student ride?
Most students ride 30 minutes or one hour once a week. The instructor decides the length of the lesson based on age, ability and stamina of the rider. Classes are held year-round. Students can advance their riding skills and increase their strength by riding more often.
Answer How are your instructors trained?
BEAT currently has two instructors certified by the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) and two in training. These registered instructors have passed a testing process which evaluated their riding and teaching skills as well as their knowledge in the areas of horsemanship, disabilities and safety procedures to name a few. Each year instructors are required to continue their education through workshops or seminars.
Answer What are the benefits of therapeutic riding?

The benefits of therapeutic riding include improvements in:
-
Balance, coordination and posture through muscle stimulation
- Attention span, emotional control and self-assurance
- Sequencing, patterning and motor planning
- Respiration and circulation

Answer Will my insurance pay for therapeutic riding?
Most insurance companies will not pay for therapeutic riding because it is considered a recreational/sport activity. Some insurance companies will reimburse the cost of hippotherapy which is conducted by a licensed physical or occupational therapist trained in hippotherapy. We hope to offer hippotherapy in the future.
Answer How much do lessons cost?
Classes cost approximately $12-$15 per half-hour lesson, and $25.00 for a one hour lesson. Lessons will include (according to the rider's interest and abilities) grooming, tacking, riding skills, games and exercises.
